OK, Dems-who-authorized-the-Iraqi-War
Listen, you've got two choices on how to come clean about your part in this:
- Saddam was stonewalling the mandated weapons inspectors, so we gave the president a big stick that would enable the inspectors to do their job. "No one could have anticipated" (it's our turn to work that magic phrase, no?) that President Bush would start a war after the force we authorized completely succeeded in opening up an unprecedented level of inspections access.
- We were pussies — but with good reason. We were totally outnumbered in every part of the government, and we'd have been run out of town on a rail by a right-wing biased news media and — let's all be honest here — by you, our constituents. I talked with a lot of you then, as I weighed my decision, and I went with what you wanted instead of what you needed. It was our job to protect you and this great country. I'm sorry we let you down — we should have stood up to the Republicans, the media, and even to you, dear voters, because it was wrong to trust Bush with this power. It was wrong to let obviously trumped-up war "evidence" slide, because it has cost the country dearly. We apologize profoundly, and will rededicate ourselves to governing in accordance with our better angels, which is what you voted us in to do before we got lost in the fog of war.
