I'm still standing
A message to Democrats-and-Repubs-are-all-the-samers and other progressive non-voters.
I, for one, am proud to vote for the likes of Al Gore, John Kerry, and Ted Kennedy.
If they are something short of gods, they are men who truly want to make the world a better place.
Look, we've been kicked around a lot in recent years — by the soulless Bushes, Cheneys, and DeLays, by a media that's either co-opted by the right or scared to death of "liberal bias" claims, and by a populace that cares about nothing but kicking some Middle Eastern ass.
Yes, in this climate, the Dems have often been bullied into acquiescence.
It sucks. It would be great if everyone had the balls of Russ Feingold. I wish they did.
But who thinks the Dems, if in power, would be pushing through bills to torture people and revoke habeas corpus? Would Democrats have suddenly stopped going after the terrorists who killed 3,000 of us in favor of a war of whim in a completely unrelated country? Would they be drawing up plans to nuke Iran, saying "bring-it-on" to Armadeddon?
The Democrats are the party of conscience. The vast majority stood up to last week's awful bill, despite a national mood where they're in constant danger of being run out of town on a rail for being "soft on terror" if they stop short of personally drawing and quartering every Muslim they encounter.
These times are fucked up, and Democrats are imperfect, but they are so massively more sane and humane than the alternative, it makes me sick to hear talk of shrugging our shoulders and not voting.
You can be sure that every dickwad who uses his vote to make sure gays can't marry and that the disenfranchised don't get a helping hand will show up at the polls. They always do.
So, how about us?

GREAT post!!!! May I quote you??
Of course, quote away. Thanks, and keep up the good work on toughenough.org!
Not voting and protest voting are very different things. One's laziness, and one is a true democratic action. (that's democratic as in "of a democracy," not as in "spineless wimps")
Like a nation of soccer moms, dems say, "keep going son, you're doing great," and the kid thinks he's got a chance to play professional sports when in reality, he's crap.
I don't know how Hillary, Kerry, or Gore are at soccer, but I do know they play a pretty shit game of politics. They don't get my vote for getting a D in effort and an F in results. I'd rather vote for Howard Stern's penis... or a Libertarian.
No doubt Patrick Henry is deeply honored by every vote for Bababooey.
I'm showin' up. Even in the reddest state of Alabama, where the Democrats just can't be Republican enough. I'm showin' up to vote Blue. Thanks for the pep talk.
Well, I don't get to vote in your elections and I'd love nothing better tahn the Repugs to be gone, BUT, I doubt they will impeach Bush/Cheney and it won't change the mid-east 'peace process' one iota.
AIPAC owns the Democrats as well.
Sorry, but if niether party will rein Israel in, nothing will change outside the US, where most of humanity lives.
OK, "standing" implies more than this.
You aren't giving me much hope I'm afraid.
As I said, I don't vote in your polls, but if you represent a movement that purports to "stand up" to Bush, and you can't or won't respond to an honest post, then you stand for bugger all in my book.
All is lost.
confudeforeigner,
Was your previous post asking a question of some sort?
Are you looking for me to say that Israel's aggression is the sole problem in the Middle East?
J'accuse religion and nationalism, as practiced by both sides.
