Crazy and crazier

Newsweek devotes six pages to discussing the role Jewish values played in developing Christian values.

They must have a big writers' room, because it accommodates two unnoticed elephants that define this folie à deux. There's not a single mention of the predominant historical or modern relationship between Christians and Jews:
  • Jews as Christkillers. Is there a better example of religious lunacy than to make part of venerating a Jewish man to hate Jewish people for their debatable role in his death? There's no shortage of racists in the world, but do any of them hate blacks for killing Tupac?
  • Jews as Rapture pawns. Even scarier than the implications of Bush's Middle-East policy being unbridled imperialism or a scheme by Zionist neo-cons, is the possibility that he's readying the region for the Rapture. Of course, who's the pawn and who's the chess master is debatable: while America's Christian Right avidly does its bidding in hopes for a second sitting of the Last Supper, the pro-Israel lobby is likely laughing all the way to the West Bank.
Of course, it doesn't have to be one or the other:
Evangelical preachers such as Pat Robertson pull off the extraordinary feat of being both anti-Semitic and passionately pro-Israel.
