An upright atheist
Tonight, Upright Citizens Brigade co-founder Matt Besser brought his one-man "Woo Pig Sooie" show to Boston's Great Scott club.
Having barely survived watching UCB's "Spaghetti Jesus" sketch, I knew Besser's comedic rant about atheism would be a can't-miss — and for once, faith was rewarded.
His style is pleasingly loose, more standup than thespian. He weaves such elements as his grandmother's letters, an updated Ten Commandments, reminiscences of growing up half-Jewish in Razorback country, and a ballsy assault on the "cult" of Catholicism (extra-ballsy in Boston, but funny enough to bring most of the audience with him).
Besser's closing anecdote about a religion/sports camp both dramatizes and comedizes why some of us want a better world than the go-along-or-else, get-along-or-else world of unquestioning, homogenized Christianity, or any of the competing monotheistic brands.
