13 out of 99, Part II

[Welcome Sideshow readers! Welcome Naked Capitalism readers!]

This is the second of two videos I'm posting with clips of the 13 people who agreed to speak with me on camera at Occupy Boston on Monday, October 17, 2011.

The first installment introduces these attendees and their reasons for coming to Occupy Boston. This second video centers on their responses to questions about national politics.

My goal in putting these videos together was two-fold:

1. I wanted to see and share an unbiased look at individuals at Occupy Boston. I had -- and have -- no agenda to spin them or the 99 percenter movement in any particular way, just trying to catch an honest glimpse into the world of the Dewey Square protests, and this corner of the movement overall.

2. I wanted to check in with people at Occupy Boston about issues of interest to me, re: presidential/party politics, to get a sampling of their views. This is covered in this video, "13 out of 99 Part II."

To be clear, I have strong opinions about politics, and that's reflected on my blog and in the questions I focus on here in Part II. But I don't seek to cultivate any particular impression of the Occupy protests and participants. My objective is to represent the essence of what I saw and heard.

Also, this is not a comprehensive documentary about Occupy Boston or the broader Occupy movement. I did not tackle questions such as how Occupy is organized, how Occupy chooses and may attempt to accomplish policy objectives, etc.

In an upcoming post here I will summarize the impressions I came away with. And I hope to be able to visit Occupy Boston again and shoot more footage there, talking with additional people about additional topics.

The bad books

The Catholic Church apparently owns a publisher whose fare includes 2,500 "erotic books."

The catechism about porn says "It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense."

If there's one thing believers in a virgin-born, water-walking, dead-raising ghost-deity should avoid at all costs, it's plummeting into a fantasy world.

In an interesting aside, Sheehan describes her "sit down meeting with [Obama] in 2005":

CS: So after Camp Casey in 2005 I was pursued by the Democratic Party. You know they recognized the power of the antiwar movement in the United States at that point. I met with everybody. I met with Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Harry Reid, John Kerry, you know from Congress people, a lot of Congress people both Democratic and Republican and they were very open meetings where their staff would be there, my staff would be there. My staff who was really my sister who ran behind the scenes…

JF: I remember your sister. She was great.

CS: And half the time her stupid phone would go off and she had the Benny Hill them music on it. I would look at her and go," really, by now you’re not turning your ringer off?" But anyway then there would be press and everything. Barack Obama insisted that it just be he and I. No press. None of his staff, none of my staff and um…

JF: He was the only one who did that?

CS: Yes, the only one that did that. You also know me very well that when I am out on the protest line it’s shorts and a protest t-shirt. So I had been going from Crawford Texas to Washington DC. It took us 3 weeks to get there. Stopping, flying and very busy. So I am still mostly in my protest attire. I walked in and the first thing he did was criticize the way I looked. Then he was very, very sarcastic, very dismissive of my input and I got the impression almost the same as when I got the face to face with George Bush..

JF: Yeah, it sounds very much like him.

CS: it was an arrogance and it was also like you said earlier a detachment from humanity. Of course I got the same impression from Hillary Clinton and most of our elected officials are to some degree bought. But a lot of them still have an ability to empathize with people. But I didn’t get that feeling from George Bush or Barack Obama.
