John Aravosis on "Are you better off than four years ago?"
The Americablog blogger weighs in on Marcy Wheeler's invocation of the question Reagan famously asked the public in 1980.

Note that amid the various threads that split off from this, Aravosis says at one point: "perhaps it’s more accurate to say country is better off and people would be far worse right now if McCain had won."
But the question at hand wasn't "would an alt-reality term by the vanquished opponent have been worse?" It was the traditional query about how American citizens fared under the incumbent's tenure. And these are remarkably unappetizing responses, something Aravosis admits is a "tough sell," which could also be said of his casting Obama as a stalwart, lifesaving oncologist and mattress-delivery man.

Aravosis lost all credibility long ago.

Very nicely said.
Hey, if we're going to put our faith in alternate realities, here's mine:
We'd be better off if McCain/Palin had won because the Dems would have made it their mission to crap in McP's soup, purely for political reasons of course, as opposed to carrying every drop of Obama's fascist, corporatist, warmongering water for him and in the process moving the political "center" so far to the right that it effectively redefines Nixon as a liberal.
"Are you a lot better off than you were 4 years ago?" Not if you were one of these Yemenis...

But when you're foreign and brown, no one cares.
I agree with Harley. :/
Last year, I tried to get my household enrolled in HAMP. Despite both mr_xeno and I having incomes that are irregular at best, we were informed after an interminable wait that we were somewhere between sixty and seventy dollars too wealthy for the program.
Johnny, Dude... uh, where's MY "chemo-mattress"? Your hero Hopey said he couldn't afford to let me have one. (Unless you count the princely $144 a week I made from the State while between lousy, nowhere temp jobs.) So why don't both just kiss off. Christ.
HAMP was still going last year? I thought that it had been shut down out of embarrassment over what a disaster it was.
Ms Xeno, good to see you again.
Hey, VA Green. How's it going?
(We may actually have commenced the inquiry into HAMP the year before. I definitely recall that it took them about ten billion months to finally get a rejction back to us. Because they cared soooo much about the middle class. Fuckers.)
Pretty good. A little tired after our successful petition drive to get Jill Stein on the ballot. We couldn't have done it without Ms. VAGreen notarizing hundreds of petition sheets.
Sorry to hear about your experience with HAMP. I just wish the Dems would become an honest center-right party without the pretense of leftish sympathies. I would actually respect that more than the hypocritical dual message that they send now.
My hat is off to you both. 8)
Yeah, I agree. I wish they'd just go ahead and embrace their obvious worship of robber barons without all this increasingly fake diffidence about it. This is a popular sport locally in our "Progressive" stronghold and it just drives me up the freaking wall.
