It amazes me, in a very dismally discouraging way, how the Obama supporters whose lives were dominated by excoriating Bush blithely rationalize similar behaviors, and worse, in Obama.
This willingness to toss out rational thinking is a trait also exhibited by the religious fundamentalists they despise so much.
"A nationalist is one who thinks solely, or mainly, in terms of competitive prestige. He may be a positive or a negative nationalist — that is, he may use his mental energy either in boosting or in denigrating — but at any rate his thoughts always turn on victories, defeats, triumphs and humiliations. He sees history, especially contemporary history, as the endless rise and decline of great power units, and every event that happens seems to him a demonstration that his own side is on the upgrade and some hated rival is on the downgrade. But finally, it is important not to confuse nationalism with mere worship of success. The nationalist does not go on the principle of simply ganging up with the strongest side. On the contrary, having picked his side, he persuades himself that it is the strongest, and is able to stick to his belief even when the facts are overwhelmingly against him. Nationalism is power-hunger tempered by self-deception. Every nationalist is capable of the most flagrant dishonesty, but he is also — since he is conscious of serving something bigger than himself — unshakeably certain of being in the right." -- George Orwell, "Notes on Nationalism"
[sigh] I made the mistake of mixing it up with several Dem-apologists on CD this weekend.
I think my favorite was the one who delivered the usual stern lecture about the "Great Lesson of 2000" and how we Lost Paradise because the mean ol' Greens wouldn't vote for the Great and Noble Gore and... eh, you all know the drill by now.
In the next beat, they were asking Why do you say that Democrats attack Greens? What did Democrats ever do to you? I don't understand?
Where the hell is that Bingo board when a person really needs it?
VL, sometimes I worry that these comics are too flat and one-dimensional a depiction of the Dem mind, but never again. If anything, some of these cartoons err on the side of kindness compared to watching that shit unfold in real time (or internet-time), at least.

Ironic, isn't it?
