I agree with Harley Burton. It amazes me that the Dems thinks they're somehow entitled to the left. Dems have more in common with Repubs than they do with any semblance of "the left".
The funniest part of the reactions on Common Dreams was how the apologist's apologists kept insisting that no no no, she wasn't railing at us for not supporting Obama.
Then they most turned around and railed at us for not supporting Obama, Kerry, Gore, Clinton, and Harvey the Wonder Hamster.
The second funniest part was being informed that when somebody calls you "rancid," et al it's your own issues that cause you to take it personally. Pppht. If she's going to insult people, can't her fan club just own up to it? I can enjoy a good therapeutic insult-fest as much as the next person, but only if everyone involved is honest about it.
The argument for lesser of two evils voting follows:
Only when the two parties of the conservative political class are less evil by historical standards and less in need of reform is it then safe to attempt reform. Since the parties are both conservative and are only marginally different, the only SAFE time for reform is when the political class as a whole has become less corrupted and less evil. Only when BOTH parties are LESS in need of reform should a vote be cast for a third party candidate. Only at a time when the urgency for reform is NOT a strong motivation for voting for a third party is it safe to vote for a third party. Otherwise the marginally less evil vote will be split by the third party vote and lose to the marginally MORE evil in our corrupt electoral system.
The argument against lesser of two evils voting as a reinforcement of corruption follows:
The public should WAIT until the government becomes less corrupted and less evil before attempting reform. The Lesser Evil Party will be asking the pubic to wait for years while posing as impotent do-gooders, apathetic leaders of an apathetic public. The evils and corruption will be portrayed as a temporary abnormality.
Hence, reform can be INTENTIONALLY forestalled by MAXIMIZING corruption and evil with the understanding that the Lesser Evil Party will not allow the marginal difference gap to expand or contract, thereby maintaining the perception of third party votes as unacceptably dangerous in a time of increasing evil and corruption. Excluding third parties, to the advantage of the duopoly, minimizes public interference with the business of the conservative political class. The Greater Evil Party can extend what is portrayed by the Lesser Evil Party as a TEMPORARY abnormality INDEFINATELY.
OT: Glenn Greenwald's commenters are discussing the ugliness at The Guardian at #commentisfutile. The pattern of bans does suggest that The Guardian is indeed using the same Hannity/Colmes approach seen on Hullabaloo, the chances of a poster getting banned seem basically proportional to the poster's effectiveness in arguing their point.
Might you consider taking a more active stance in light of this VL?
It sounds like GG has taken an active interest in the problems... which I still haven't seen any helpful summary of. Why is this my cross to bear?
I'm glad if people are advocating for a better comment policy at a notable column/blog, but sorry I've got a way too time-consuming enough unpaid beat to take this on.
As I understand it, her comment system Halo has pulled the plug on itself (which is why, for example, Avedon Carol just moved her blog to Blogger). I have no idea if Digby is planning to use an alternative comment system (such as the built-in one on Blogger, which is the platform Hullabaloo runs on). I'm happy to hear updates about how that progresses, thanks.
If you don't want to get involved it's your perogative, it's just that the supply of venues left for open discussion is getting very sparse indeed.
I'm not sure I can summarize it any better than I have. Pedinska commented for years at Salon and is now banned. Catvsroomba was one of the more articulate posters, now banned. It seems some posters have been banned just for posting effective rebuttals. It's all looks very depressingly familiar.
I don't personally hold out much hope for Greenwald's negotiations with TG, nothing I've seen form them so far gives me any expectation that they're going to play fair.
And the little privateers prove themselves able to censor just as effectively, and rationalize it just as thoroughly, as the King Himself. Who needs new paid operatives? The unpaid ones are doing just fine.
On a side note, though, Solnit is probably drawing her paycheck for stuff like that. Should we judge her so harshly for trying to make a living under this terrible ruler?

Nitwits like Solnit act like there is a law that lefties must self-identify with the Democrats and blindly support them.
I don't like fascist corporatist right-wingers regardless of the party label they carry.
That means no Democrats for me.

Apparently there will be no stealth censorship at Hullabaloo any more.
They've eliminated their comment section altogether.

As I understand Rebecca Solnit's preposterous proposition: The left wheel that doesn't squeak gets the grease.
